The Grace of God’s Presence
_And He said, ‘My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest._ Exodus 33:14
The journey before Moses was a herculean one. How does a man lead a people who are stubborn, unyielding, and constantly longing to return to Egypt?
Moses understood that labouring without God’s presence would amount to futility. Even when God promised to send an angel, Moses refused because he knew that what truly makes the difference in a man’s life is the presence of God. That is why no one should embark on any journey in life based on assumption; we must consciously ask for His divine presence. For Moses, the only thing that would distinguish Israel from all other nations was God going with them. Otherwise, they preferred to remain where they were (Exodus 33:15).
The presence of God upon a person is proof that such a one has found grace in His sight, and that they are set apart from the rest of the world (Exodus 33:16). And indeed, God listened to the cry of Moses.
Life becomes a joyful journey when God’s presence accompanies a man. The tasks ahead become sweet when a man finds this grace. The enemy knows this, which is why he tempts men with the bait of pride, causing God to resist them and withdraw His presence. Samson did not realise that the Lord had departed from him when he said, “I will go out as before” (Judges 16:20). He rose, but God had left him.
Beloved, seek His presence as you go about your life journey. Do not assume; ask daily in prayer. A man who seeks God’s presence walks in correct revelation. He finds rest for his soul, enjoys refreshing, dwells in divine refuge, and God Himself rebukes his enemies.
When God brings a man into His presence, that man begins to see correctly, that is revelation. When John was on the Island of Patmos, God said, I will show you great and mighty things (Revelation 1:1–2). Elisha’s servant trembled when he saw the enemy surrounding them, but Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” And the Lord opened his eyes, and he saw the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire (2 Kings 6:17).
Beloved, a man who dwells in God’s presence lives in constant revelation of God’s workings, and that revelation brings rest. No wonder God told Moses, “I will give you rest.” The moment Elisha’s servant saw correctly, fear disappeared.
Let me stop here for today. When the Lord grants us opportunity, we shall consider other assurances that accompany His presence.
What prayer should you pray now?
Lord, in Your mercy, grant me Your presence. Do not cast me away from Your presence. Show me mercy, that I may find grace in Your sight. Open my eyes to see as You see, and grant me rest on every side.
May you find this grace in His sight, in Jesus’ name. God bless you. Amen.
