HEART OF GRATITUDE

By Evang. Taiye Ajayi

Friends, God is ever faithful.

Today, we will be looking at a subject that many people overlook because their eyes are fixed on unanswered prayers, making answered prayers seem ordinary. One of the greatest qualities a believer can possess is a heart of gratitude.

Gratitude is the deliberate decision to look beyond your present challenges and say, "Thank You, Lord." It is choosing to trust God's goodness even when life does not make sense.

The Bible says, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28). God desires that we remain grateful in every season—during times of abundance and in seasons of lack. A grateful heart declares, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow." It believes that "a living dog is better than a dead lion" (Ecclesiastes 9:4), knowing that as long as there is life, there is hope.

No matter the level you think you have attained, there are countless people praying to be where you are—financially, academically, professionally, spiritually, or even physically. The Bible instructs us, "In everything give thanks" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Thanksgiving is not based on circumstances; it is based on confidence in God's faithfulness.

A heart of gratitude opens doors and causes God's favor to rest upon our lives. If we, as human beings, appreciate those who thank us for our kindness, how much more will God delight in those who continually appreciate Him? Sadly, many people have missed divine blessings because they chose complaining over thanksgiving.

The children of Israel are a clear example. Although God delivered them from Egypt, many of them perished in the wilderness because they constantly complained instead of giving thanks. Their carcasses fell in the wilderness, and many never entered the Promised Land because of unbelief and ingratitude.

Whether as individuals, families, churches, communities, organizations, or nations, we must cultivate a lifestyle of thanksgiving. Gratitude attracts greater blessings. A thankful person becomes a "tank-full" person—filled with God's goodness and favor. There is a strong connection between God's blessings and a grateful heart.

Jesus taught that those who are faithful with little will be entrusted with much. Gratitude is evidence of faithfulness. When God gives you one room and you thank Him, He is able to bless you with a two-bedroom apartment. When a pastor is grateful for five members, God can entrust him with ten, then hundreds, and eventually thousands. When a business owner remains thankful for small profits, God gives increase. Complaining delays progress, but thanksgiving attracts promotion.

I experienced this personally.

After graduating from the university, I searched for stable employment for eleven years. During that period, I survived on low-income jobs. Eventually, I was offered a teaching job in a secondary school with a salary of just ₦20,000 per month. I was disappointed and almost rejected the offer. But my father advised me, "Take the job. God will provide something better."

I listened to his counsel. I accepted the job, thanked God for the opportunity, and served wholeheartedly. Two months later, I secured another job that paid ₦93,000 per month. Four months after that, God opened another door, and I began earning a six-figure salary.

That experience taught me a life-changing lesson: a heart of gratitude is the key to the next level.

Gratitude announces your readiness for greater opportunities. It positions you for divine favor. It allows God to work wonders on your behalf. It attracts the right people into your life, strengthens your character, and prepares you for greater responsibilities.

Whatever season you are in today, choose gratitude over complaining. Thank God for where you are, and trust Him for where He is taking you.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for every blessing You have given me, both seen and unseen. Forgive me for every time I have complained instead of giving thanks. Fill my heart with gratitude in every season of life. As I remain thankful, open new doors, increase me on every side, and let my life continually reflect Your goodness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
