THE WORD OF LIFE
"As you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain." — Philippians 2:16
The Word of Life carries the capacity to keep a man from laboring in vain. The word God sends to a person has the ability to preserve him from wasted years, wasted efforts, and wasted opportunities.
The Bible says:
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'" — Isaiah 30:21
One of the greatest assignments of the Word of Life is to set a man free from bondage. Jesus spoke to the man at the pool of Bethesda who had been in affliction for thirty-eight years and said, "Take up your bed and walk." Through that word, healing flowed, and his victory was released.
The Scriptures declare:
"He sent out his word and healed them." — Psalm 107:20
The Word of Life is Christ Himself. The Bible says:
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind." — John 1:1,4
Yesterday, while discussing with some people, I shared that one of the ways to hear God correctly concerning any matter in life is to remain grounded in His Word. If you fail to dwell on God's Word, you may hear other voices and mistake them for the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Someone once said that the Lord told him not to pay his tithe. I asked him, "What does the Word of God say about tithing?" He did not know.
Friends, praying for hours without dwelling on the Word of God can be dangerous because it may expose a person to voices that do not align with Scripture. One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to remind us of the Word we have stored in our hearts when the challenges of life arise.
Some time ago, I faced a challenge that almost overwhelmed me. Yet in the midst of it all, I kept hearing the Holy Spirit remind me of a verse from Psalm 91:
"I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him."
That word brought peace to my heart even in the middle of the storm.
Reading your Bible daily is a spiritual exercise that keeps a man alive in God, while prayer keeps him connected to heaven.
The Bible says:
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." — 2 Timothy 3:16
From this passage, we see that the Word of Life is given by God for four purposes:
- To teach.
- To rebuke.
- To correct.
- To train us in righteousness.
Friends, let me ask you a question: What are you filling your heart with? What occupies your thoughts? What constantly runs through your mind?
The mind is always at work. The heart meditates on what the eyes have seen, what the ears have heard, what the nose has perceived, and what the body has experienced. All these things have a way of shaping who we become.
That is why the Bible instructs us:
"Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." — Philippians 4:8
The Lord also commanded Joshua:
"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." — Joshua 1:8
The Word of Life is not merely a collection of pages; it is God's breath to humanity, His direction for the lost, His healing for the broken, His correction for the wandering, and His light for those walking in darkness.
Hold firmly to the Word of Life, for a man who stays with God's Word will never lack God's direction.
