OBEDIENCE: THE PATHWAY TO GREATNESS
"If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all His commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth."
Deuteronomy 28:1
Praise God!
Obedience to God's Word is one of the greatest proofs of our love for Him. Throughout life, God brings instructions our way and watches to see whether we will trust Him enough to obey. Many people fail in life not because they lack talent, intelligence, or diligence, but because they fail in obedience.
Our opening scripture reveals one of the rewards of obedience: God sets the obedient above nations. Greatness in the Kingdom is often hidden in simple acts of obedience.
Many times, when God leads His children, He does not reveal the full picture of His intentions. He simply gives an instruction and expects us to trust Him enough to follow. God's treasures are often hidden behind simple obedience to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. These promptings may sound foolish to the natural mind, seem unwise to human reasoning, and may not appeal to conventional wisdom.
Too often, we want to figure everything out before taking a step. We want all the details before we obey. But God's ways are far higher than our ways, and His thoughts far above our thoughts, just as the heavens are higher than the earth.
If you ignore God's voice today, the world may ignore you tomorrow.
A minister once shared with me an experience that greatly affected both his ministry and marriage. As a young man with great passion for God, he sought the Lord concerning his future wife. During prayer, God spoke clearly to him:
"Go and start a fellowship; your wife will meet you there."
He obeyed and began the fellowship. One day, a young woman attended one of the meetings, and the Lord impressed upon his heart:
"This is your wife."
Excited, he shared this with his mother. However, she began to plead with him:
"Please don't marry her. She cannot speak our language. Who will keep me company whenever I visit?"
Instead of obeying God, he obeyed his mother.
A week later, his mother introduced him to another woman and encouraged him to marry her, assuring him she would never mislead him. He followed his mother's counsel rather than God's instruction.
Years later, he openly admitted that he had not recovered from the consequences of that decision. The marriage brought pain and challenges that affected both his family life and ministry. He often wondered what his life would have looked like had he simply obeyed God.
God never gives instructions to deprive us; He gives them to preserve us and position us for His best. He is our Heavenly Father and desires good things for His children. Yet, His blessings are often connected to our willingness to obey.
Many people who were destined for great heights settled for less because they ignored divine instructions.
Our God is still speaking today. If we remain obedient, He will continually move us from one level of greatness to another.
As believers, God desires that we achieve greatness, but greatness begins with hearing Him. Sadly, many Christians cannot hear God for themselves and depend entirely on others to hear on their behalf. If you find yourself in this category, pray earnestly that God will open your ears to hear His voice and commit yourself to studying His Word regularly.
The Bible says:
"If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land."
Isaiah 1:19
Are you struggling in your workplace, your finances, your business, your ministry, or concerning who you should marry? God desires to lead you.
One of the greatest blessings God has given me is the ability to hear His voice even in the midst of life's storms; to follow Him when the journey seems unclear; and to move when He says "Go," even when I cannot see the resources or understand the process.
Through it all, I have discovered one truth:
God remains faithful to those who trust and obey Him.
Let me end with this story.
A father took his little son to a river and asked him to jump into his arms from a distance. The boy hesitated because he was afraid of falling into the water. The father stretched out his hands and said, "Trust me, I will catch you."
After a moment of hesitation, the boy jumped.
The father caught him safely.
The boy did not jump because he understood the science of the distance or calculated the possibility of success. He jumped because he trusted his father.
This is exactly how God calls us to live.
Not by explanations, calculations, or human wisdom, but by trust and obedience.
When God says move, move.
When God says wait, wait.
When God says let go, let go.
When God says begin, begin.
Your obedience today may be the doorway to the greatness God has prepared for your tomorrow.
Prayer
Father, give me a hearing ear and an obedient heart. Help me to trust Your leading even when I do not understand Your ways. Deliver me from the trap of human reasoning and teach me to follow Your voice completely. May my obedience lead me into the fullness of Your purpose for my life, in Jesus' name. Amen.
