The Food of the Spirit
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." — Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4
Just as food nourishes the physical body, the Word of God and prayer nourish the spirit. Physical food provides the strength and nutrients the body needs to function. A person who is deprived of food becomes weak and unable to carry out daily activities. In the same way, a believer who neglects God's Word and prayer becomes spiritually weak.
The Bible speaks of milk for spiritual infants and solid food for the mature. As our physical bodies require healthy meals to grow, our spirit also requires constant nourishment through prayer, meditation, and the study of God's Word.
When we pray and spend time meditating on Scripture, we strengthen our inner man. God's Word becomes spiritual nourishment that equips us to withstand temptation, overcome the attacks of the enemy, and remain spiritually alert. A prayerless believer becomes weak and vulnerable to spiritual decline. The Word of God and prayer remain the primary food upon which the spirit thrives and grows. The battles we see in the physical are first won in the spiritual.
One day, I visited a farm in Gboko, Benue State, Nigeria. As I walked through the farm, the Lord spoke to my heart, saying, "As ministers of the gospel, you cultivate spiritual crops for people to eat. When you fail to cultivate, you leave your generation hungry."
That encounter reminded me that the study of God's Word never ends for a minister. We must continually draw from the well of Scripture so that we never become empty. A prayerful pastor often raises a prayerful congregation, while a pastor who neglects the Word produces a spiritually dry church.
Feeding on God's Word every day keeps your spirit fresh, strong, and alive. Let me share something that has consistently helped me. Whenever I go through difficult seasons in life, I simply pick up my Bible and begin to read. As I meditate on God's promises, my burdens begin to lift, peace fills my heart, and strength returns to my spirit.
Never allow a day to pass without feeding your spirit. Your Bible is more than a book—it is the bread of life. Prayer is more than a routine—it is the breath of your spiritual life. Feed your spirit daily, and you will remain strong, fruitful, and victorious in Christ.
